Summer 2024
This summer, we brought an incredible array of activities and experiences to children aged 5-16 through our much-anticipated annual Summer Scheme, which started on 24th July 2024 at our Lozell’s community centre, and thereafter Small Heath scheme opened on 29th July. The scheme provided a safe and enriching environment for children to learn, play, and grow. Both schemes ran from Monday to Thursday, with morning sessions for primary-aged children and afternoon sessions for secondary-aged children. We had over 400 children booked across both schemes.
Daily Activities
Children dabbled in arts and crafts, creating everything from robotic hands and murals to bookmarks and kites. Physical activities were equally varied, featuring daily energisers, yoga sessions, and a wide range of sports including hockey, golf, rounders, football, cricket and basketball. The Warwickshire Cricket Board provided weekly cricket coaching at both locations, allowing children to hone their skills under expert guidance. Additionally, a bike riding session organised by British Cycling and an adventurous bell boating experience at Ackers Adventure added excitement and variety to the programme.
Learning Valuable Skills
Beyond sports and crafts, the children participated in valuable learning experiences. A First Aid session conducted by St John's Ambulance equipped them with essential life-saving skills. The children’s enthusiasm was palpable as they engaged in these practical and life-enriching activities.
Nutritious Meals and Healthy Snacks
Ensuring that children received nutritious meals was a key focus of our programme. Each day began with a healthy breakfast offering a variety of cereals, toast, milk, squash, and water. For lunch, children enjoyed an impressive selection of dishes, including chicken pasta bake, biriyani, rice and curry, chicken mushroom and lemon rice and spaghetti bolognese. To keep their energy levels up throughout the day, we also provided snacks such as cakes, fresh fruits and refreshing cool drinks.
Special Events and Excursions
One of the highlights of our Summer Scheme was the Sports Day in Small Heath Park on Tuesday 6th August. The day was filled with laughter and joy as the children participated in a traditional races, including, egg and spoon, sack race, bean bag and three legged race. Prizes and medals were awarded to those who did well, creating memories they will cherish for time to come.
The excitement didn't end there! Our weekly trips took the children on incredible journeys, including sightseeing in London, hiking the beautiful Brecon Beacons in Wales, exploring the West Midlands Safari Park, and enjoying a sunny day at Skegness Beach. These excursions were fun, educational and provide the children a chance to explore new environments and learn about the world around them.
Winter Scheme 2023
During the Christmas holidays, Community Foundation delivered holiday schemes at two locations in Birmingham, between Wed 28th Dec 2023 and Fri 5th Jan 2024. At each location, we delivered a morning session for primary aged girls and boys and an afternoon session for secondary aged girls and boys.
Our regular scheme at Small Heath was a success as children enjoyed themselves and really engaged with all activities. This Winter Scheme also marked the reopening of our Lozells' community centre (which has been closed since April 2022) where we delivered our second scheme. Children took part in arts and crafts; making rockets, face masks, drawing and painting. The children also participated in sports, energisers and fun games. Alongside this, to tackle holiday hunger we delivered food provision as children received at least one healthy and nutritious meal a day.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the funders and donors whose contributions made these programmes possible. Their support enabled us to create memorable moments for the children and families involved. If you are inspired by our work and wish to make a positive impact on the lives of others, we invite you to contribute by donating to support our community programmes. Your donation, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in sustaining and expanding our initiatives, ensuring that more families can benefit from enriching experiences and opportunities.
On Thurs 28th Dec, children and their families had the opportunity to visit Blackpool Pleasure Beach for a day of fun, followed by an evening illuminated by the captivating Blackpool Illuminations. During the following week, on Wed 3rd Jan, children and their families made a local trip to Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum where they toured the museum, visited the different exhibits and gained valuable knowledge.
With these exciting adventures, we concluded our 2023 holiday schemes. Stay tuned to our website for updates on our upcoming holiday programmes in 2024.

Our 4 weeks summer holiday scheme concluded on Thursday 25 August 2022. The scheme started on the 2nd of August and was open Monday - Thursday for primary aged children in the morning and secondary aged children in the afternoon. We had capacity for 100 children in each session supervised by five energetic full time staff. Children were given free healthy breakfast and lunch each day along with a range of sports such as golf coaching, hockey coaching, football, basketball, rounders, and cricket. Both girls and boys tried out each of the sports session, some for the very first time. In addition to sports, we also had fun energiser games, PE, growing our own tomatoes, arts and crafts. We also organised two day trips to West Midlands Safari Park with rides, Blackpool beach and Dovedale in the Peak District for a scenic cross country walk, all of which were highly enjoyed by all the children. Unfortunately we had to cancel our sports day in the park due to inclement weather forecast in the last week.
